Throwback Music: Ruff, Rugged And Raw — Wetin Dey (Prod. Paul Play)

  • pFor those of you who were consistent inp listening to Kaduna radio stations back then, the name Ruff, Rugged And Raw can never be new to you especially their most frequently played jam, "Wetin Dey" all over Kaduna radio stations.

The hottest hardcore rap group in Nigeria, Ruff, Rugged And Raw, made up of two brothers, “B-RITE” (Kingsley Ayovunaduo) and “HANGMAN” (David Ayovunaduo), took the radio and club scenes in London by storm with the club banging single

“WETIN DEY,” produced by Paul Play (C.E.O. PLAYGROUND ENTERTAINMENT). Radio stations and clubs in Nigeria are still going crazy for the song. The album “GOD IS WITH US” is the most anticipated rap album in 2005. The group was formed in 1990 and included a third member, “JAY GANGSTA,” who left in 2000. Ruff, Rugged And Raw is widely known and respected for its “rough neck hardcore,” which is fast gaining popularity at the moment. True hip-hop heads and personalities like GRANDMASTER LEE (STAR FM) and JACOB AKINYEMI JOHNSON (RHYTHM) quickly recognized their skill and featured them in many radio shows and rap concerts though unsigned. They moved to the next level and featured on TONY TETUILA’S hit song “OMODE META NSERE.” Their unique style caught Paul Play's attention during Tony Tetuila’s album project. He featured them on his monster hit “YESOH” from his debut album. They went on to produce the hardcore rap song “KASALA GO BURST” which ruled the airwaves in 2000 and won the group their respect. Without an album released, they were contracted to perform at gigs in universities across the country. Paul Play could not convince the group to prune down on their hardcore style and embrace commercial rap until 2004, and they were signed to Playground Entertainment label.

Today on our Throwback classic special, we bring to your listening pleasure this evergreen and lyrically blazing hit,

"Wetin Dey" by Ruff, Rugged And Raw.
