Iceland players can have sex before match with Nigeria, says coachHeimir

It’s official! Iceland players will be allowed to have sex ahead of their World Cup game against Nigeria. It comes with a caveat, though: “as long as it’s with their wives”.

Coach Heimir Hallgrimsson made this declaration during the pre-match conference on Thursday.
When a reporter asked if sex was banned for members of the squad, Iceland captain Aron Gunnarsson said, laughing: “For the time being, yes.”

Hallgrimsson, however, cleared the air by giving his approval.

“At least as long as the wives have not arrived. No, sex is not banned, it’s bullshit,” he said.

It’s really bullshit because there’s a lack of evidence proving sex makes people worse, or better, at sports.

“It’s often talked about, but it has not been shown to be true,” says sports medicine physician Dr Jordan Metzel.

“There are lots of factors that could account for how a player performs.” For instance, engaging in the act can take time away from getting enough sleep, and lack of sleep is non-negotiable for peak performance.

In the year 2000, the New York Yankees manager Casey Stengel once said: “It’s not the sex that wrecks these guys, it’s staying up all night looking for it.”

Iceland’s players are due to be reunited with their families on Thursday in Volgograd where they face Nigeria on Friday in a Group D game.
